Mining and resource-based industries are at the heart of the Timmins economy. The local labour force reflects the demand for skills in these sectors. In 2020, mining sector jobs comprised 13.3% of total employment in the city.

Timmins has the youngest labour force and the highest employment participation rate of the five major Northern Ontario cities, and nearly half of this labour force is bilingual. While natural resources are still at the heart of the economy, Timmins has diversified to include other growing sectors such as health, government services, education, and retail.
